Name:  Shelly Cannon
Age: 34
Location:  Daytona Beach, FL

What does being a GGS mean to you?
It means acting as a positive role model and inspiring women to challenge themselves and not be afraid to break stereotypes.

How long have you been training?
Seriously training about 4 years.

Favorite lift:
Deadlift

Most memorable PR:
At the 2013 Raw Unity Meet (RUM), when I deadlifted 330 ― which was 15 pounds over my personal best. The best part was that it felt easy! I was pretty shocked. Here is the video:

Top 5 songs on your training playlist:

  • Pardon Me by Incubus
  • Killing in the Name by Rage Against The Machine
  • I Don't Care (I Love It) by Power Girl
  • Sugar We're Going Down by Fallout Boy
  • Radioactive by Imagine Dragons

Top 3 things you must have with you at the gym/in your gym bag:

  • Powerlifting belt
  • Headphones
  • BCAAs

Most hilarious pick-up line you’ve heard at the gym:
It was just last week! "Uh, are you an Olympian or something?"

Favorite way to treat yourself:
Massage!

Favorite quote:
The best is yet to come.

Favorite book:
The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeanette Walls. The closest thing to the story of my life, the way I would tell it ― with humor, without dramatizing or self-pity. Very real.

Favorite post workout meal:
Pollo Tropical ― grilled chicken breast with balsamic tomatoes and yellow rice.

What inspires and motivates you?
Music and surrounding myself with extraordinary people.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Wake at 7 a.m., snooze until 7:30, out the door by 8. Drive 40 minutes to work.  Work 9 to 5ish, then drive an hour to the gym. Train 6:30-8:30, then drive an hour home. Eat, shower, pack gym bag, prep food, and lay out clothes for the next day, collapse. Usually sleeping by midnight.

What’s the coolest “side effect” you’ve noticed from lifting heavy?
A bubble butt!

Next training goal:
Set a world powerlifting record

If you had to choose 3 words to describe yourself, what would they be?
Passionate, loving, positive

What do you want to say to other women who might be nervous to start lifting heavy?
As long as your diet is on track you don't need to worry about getting huge.  If at any point you don't like how much muscle you gain (not likely), you can just stop and they will slowly go away. Just try it ― you will never go back!
