GGS Spotlight: Juliet Gotthardt
What does being a GGS mean to you?
Bluntly honest opinion #1: Being a girl gone strong doesn’t mean much of anything to me. Strong goes beyond gender. It is difficult to describe. To me, it means embarking on a journey that which most of society doesn’t understand. It is the endless pursuit to better myself while embracing the beauty of what I already am, in my entirety. That kind of strong is important for everyone.
How long have you been training?
I almost feel cliché saying the conventional deadlift, but it’s true. I heart them. I’m also very fond of heavy sandbag and farmer carries.
Most memorable PR:
I guess my lifts from the only powerlifting meet I competed in, this past January. I nailed a 10# PR on my squat and hit a previous PR on my deadlift that I had only ever been able to get once prior. My bench wasn’t a PR, but I was happy nonetheless.

Top 3 things you must have with you at the gym/in your gym bag:
EliteFTS single prong belt, bands, a piece of PVC pipe I use for a ‘foam roller’
Favorite post workout meal:
Bluntly honest opinion #2: I don’t really care about meal timing. Sometimes I don’t even eat after I lift or just grab a piece of fruit – GASP! If you browbeat me into picking something, I would say those self-serve frozen yogurt places. I’d eat at one all the time if I could. Or meat. I love meat. I love food, really.
Favorite way to treat yourself:
Sometimes it is getting my beloved froyo, other it is times watching Netflix and painting my nails on the couch. It could be going to the gym or being able to learn new things in my classes. Life is my treat; it is too short not to enjoy. (Okay. Yes, I really don’t enjoy doing laundry or sweeping up pet hair off the floor.)

What inspires and motivates you?
Reminding myself that everything is only temporary usually gives me a swift kick in the butt. Also, seeing and competing in my meet showed me just how dang cool being big and lifting big is. I put up the same total as a 74-year-old woman, and it was her first meet too. That is so freaking cool. I want to keep training so I can out lift her when I’m her age.
Next training goal:
A 300 pound deadlift is going to happen by the end of 2013. No doubt.
If you had to choose 3 words to describe yourself, what would they be?
Sarcastic, hard working, and big (<<< Do the descriptions have to be true? I want to be big!)
What do you want to say to other women who might be nervous to start lifting heavy?
What is there to be nervous about? Men and women can manage raising children (often alone), juggle a job or two, handle large sums of money, figurine out what to do when there’s not enough money, get advanced degrees, invent brilliant new technologies, travel the globe, but are afraid of picking up a piece of metal? Put things in perspective, there is nothing to lose from trying something new.
