What’s Your Dream?

One of my favorite quotes…

I was recently talking to a friend about what they wanted out of life.  I actually do this a lot as I find myself having one of two reactions: inspired to dream bigger because of them, or, if they have very few goals and dreams, I am quietly reminded to NEVER be someone who doesn’t dream.

This friend initially responded that they hadn’t thought about it much, and then went ahead and gave a simple, somewhat generic answer.  Something about finding a job they like, maybe getting married, possibly children, and maybe travel a little once they retire.

I found myself completely taken aback by this person’s lack of passion, planning, dreaming, and enthusiasm about what can be achieved by each of us.  This person is beyond brilliant, funny, kind, athletic, and attractive.

So what on Earth has kept them from dreaming big dreams?  Making huge plans?  Setting gigantic goals?

Have they never been shown what’s possible?  Are they afraid of failure? Do they feel ill-equipped or incapable of reach those dreams?  It’s hard to say, as I am not in their head, but I can say that I hope things change for them.

This clip from “Pretty Woman” always makes me smile…

One very important piece of having big goals and dreams, in my opinion, is saying them out loud.  Whether it’s to your friends, your family, your spouse, or to yourself in the mirror…SAY THEM!  Say them loud and proud, and never let anyone tell you that they are out of your reach.

Shout your goals and dreams from a mountain top! And don’t stop until you reach them!

Below, I am going to share some of my goals and dreams (in my “before 35 category,” I am currently 28), in hopes that it will inspire me to work harder towards them, and inspire others to post their dreams below in the comments section!  Let’s all dream together, encourage one another, and glean inspiration from the dreams of others who dream BIG just like we do!

  1. Positively affect the lives of everyone with whom I come in contact.
  2. Speak. Travel. Write.
  3. Educate women about intelligent methods of nutrition/training/lifestyle.
  4. Teach women how to love themselves and their bodies, no matter how “imperfect,” while never settling for less than they are capable of achieving.
  5. Change the world of women’s fitness, by making it about being strength and empowerment instead of scale weight and shame about our bodies.
  6. Get published.
  7. Be a millionaire.
  8. Continue learning, evolving, and honing my craft.
  9. Be super effective with my time so I have plenty of free time to do whatever I’d like.
  10. Build my gym into something that helps hundreds of people in my hometown get healthy with the least amount of effort possible.
  11. Help others reach their goals and dreams.
***IF the time is right, and only if it is the right person, get married and (possibly) have babies, and be an amazing wife and mother. =)

OK, now that I have shared my dreams… will you share yours?  Please comment below!  I’d love to read what you want out of life!

This is exactly what I needed to read tonight Molly! Thank you! I just made a huge decision to acquire my personal training certification through NASM and while I am excited to learn and have huge goals, I also have mega doubts about myself and worry that I’ll never be in good enough physical shape to actually be a trainer. I know that I need to stop the negative self talk and work hard and it will pay off. I’ve never been an ‘athlete’ before, but recently started practicing with a roller derby league (draft is coming up! hopefully I’ll make a team!) and have felt so inspired by my last 4 months of training that I decided to listen to the voice in my head that has told me for years to become a personal trainer and dedicate myself to a life and career in wellness and fitness, an area that I have felt passionate about since college. Thanks for your inspiring words! I will remember them when I feel self doubt.

It is shocking that there are so many people either not motivated or inspired to think about what they want to achieve, never mind make goals that they want to achieve. But the revelation I had about myself in the last couple weeks is that I’ve been scared to fail at EVERYTHING which has been holding me back. Post revelation I’ve been far more inspired and have come up with a huge list of things I’d like to accomplish, including: participate in Taekwondo tournaments, join the army, travel a lot, write stories, host dinner parties to remember, open a B&B, own a winery, and nurture a family whereby they remember me as the nutty relation.

I love the motivation, faith and fearlessness inspired of this post!! But I also think it’s important to NOT diminish the dreams of others, whatever they may be. In some cases, I agree that people cling to traditional life paths out of fear, but not always! Alot of passion, energy and heart can go into “finding a job you love, getting married, having children, and having an adventurous retirement” – just because it doesn’t sound olympic and fantastical, doesn’t mean it isn’t a true, impassioned and valuable dream for someone. And let’s be fair: having a job we love, being in a happy relationship with the love of our lives, and being a good parent….those are NOT SMALL tasks!! They’re beautiful dreams, just like all the rest… :) Love your website girls!! Thanks for all of it!!

Ashley – totally agree! I wasn’t shocked at their “dreams…” I was shocked at how little thought they seemed to put into them and their lack of enthusiasm about them. If they had an ounce of passion in them when they told me what they wanted, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Enjoying your job, having a family… Those are incredible things! But having no passion about your future is what I find sad.

You should not have a job you enjoy, you should have your DREAM job. You shouldn’t just get married, you should marry an amazing person and work extremely hard to have a fantastic marriage, etc. I hope that clears up where I am coming from! :-)

      Thanks for reading and commenting!
